1. CPU — The Brain

The CPU determines how many VMs you can run, how fast your containers compile, and how many PCIe lanes you have for expansion cards and GPUs. For most homelabs, the Ryzen 9 9950X is the sweet spot — 16 cores, 32 threads, and 28 PCIe lanes for under $700.

For budget builds, the Intel N100 at $120 is unbeatable — 6W TDP, 4 cores, and enough grunt for TrueNAS and a handful of Docker containers. For AI workloads, the Threadripper 7980X gives you 64 cores and 128 PCIe lanes for multi-GPU setups.

2. CPU Cooler — Thermal Management

Don't skimp on cooling. A 9950X at 170W needs serious thermal management. 3. Motherboard — The Backbone

The motherboard determines your PCIe slot layout, RAM capacity, and storage connectivity. For homelab use, you need at least 2 M.2 slots, an x16 slot for a GPU, and an x8 slot for an HBA card. The ASRock X870E Steel Legend gives you all that plus 2.5GbE LAN and Wi-Fi 7 for under $400.

6. NAS — Bulk Storage

For bulk storage, you have two paths: build a NAS from scratch (TrueNAS on your Proxmox host or a dedicated box), or buy a pre-built NAS.
